NYC Announces Expanded Affordable Housing Program

New York City, November 16, 2024 — Mayor Eric Adams unveiled a major expansion of the city’s affordable housing initiative today, pledging to build 25,000 additional affordable units by 2030. Dubbed “Homes for All NYC 2.0,” the plan focuses on converting vacant commercial properties, streamlining zoning laws, and incentivizing developers to include affordable units in new projects.

The announcement, made at a construction site for a new mixed-income housing complex in Queens, emphasized the city’s commitment to addressing the ongoing housing crisis. “Every New Yorker deserves a safe and affordable place to live,” Adams said. “This plan will transform underutilized spaces into homes for families, seniors, and individuals in need.”

The expanded initiative includes $3 billion in funding for affordable housing construction and rehabilitation, as well as programs to prevent evictions and assist first-time homebuyers. A key feature is the use of modular construction technology, which officials say will reduce costs and accelerate timelines.

Housing advocates welcomed the announcement but urged the city to ensure rigorous oversight and community involvement. “This is a step in the right direction, but the details matter,” said Alicia Green, director of Housing Justice NYC.

Developers praised the plan’s incentives, which include tax breaks and expedited permitting. With the city’s population continuing to grow, the success of this initiative is seen as critical to maintaining New York’s status as a livable and equitable metropolis.
