New York City, November 13, 2024 — As temperatures drop, New York City has announced an expanded Winter Shelter Initiative to provide safe, warm spaces for the homeless population. The program, which adds 2,000 temporary beds across all five boroughs, also includes increased outreach efforts and access to mental health services.
Mayor Eric Adams unveiled the initiative during a press conference at a new shelter in Queens. “No one should face the cold winter nights without a roof over their head,” Adams said. “This initiative is about compassion, dignity, and action.”
The program includes partnerships with local nonprofits and faith-based organizations to ensure shelters are equipped with resources such as meals, hygiene kits, and caseworkers to connect individuals with long-term housing solutions. Mental health counselors and substance abuse specialists will also be on-site at many shelters.
Advocates praised the city’s proactive approach but stressed the need for more permanent solutions to address homelessness. “This is an important step, but we need to focus on affordable housing and prevention,” said Carla Jenkins, director of Housing Action NYC.
The city’s outreach teams have already begun distributing blankets and information about shelter locations to those in need. Officials encouraged New Yorkers to call 311 if they encounter someone in need of assistance.
