With just one month until the New York City Marathon, organizers announced today that the 2024 race will feature a record 55,000 runners, including elite athletes, charity participants, and first-time marathoners. The event, scheduled for November 3, is expected to draw more than 2 million spectators along its iconic five-borough route.
This year’s race will highlight sustainability, with organizers implementing eco-friendly initiatives such as compostable water cups, recycling stations, and electric vehicles for logistical support. “The NYC Marathon is not just a race; it’s a celebration of resilience, community, and innovation,” said Race Director Ted Metellus.
Elite runners from around the globe will compete for a $1 million prize purse, while thousands of amateur participants are raising funds for over 400 charities. The marathon will also honor first responders, healthcare workers, and community leaders as part of its theme “Running for Heroes.”
Security measures have been heightened, with the NYPD deploying thousands of officers and installing advanced surveillance systems along the route. “Safety remains our top priority,” said Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell. “We are fully prepared to ensure a smooth and secure event.”
The marathon will be broadcast live, with millions expected to tune in worldwide. Organizers encourage residents to plan ahead for street closures and public transportation adjustments.
