NYC Public Hospitals Report Record Low Wait Times in ERs

The NYC Health + Hospitals system announced today that emergency room wait times across its public hospitals have reached their lowest levels in over a decade. The milestone follows a series of reforms aimed at improving patient flow and expanding capacity, including the addition of more staff, streamlined triage protocols, and new urgent care centers.

Dr. Mitchell Katz, CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals, attributed the success to a combination of strategic investments and a focus on preventive care. “We’ve worked hard to ensure that New Yorkers receive timely, high-quality care when they need it most,” Katz said at a press conference at Bellevue Hospital.

Patients and advocacy groups praised the improvements, noting that long ER wait times have been a persistent issue for underserved communities. “This is a significant step forward for equity in healthcare,” said Cynthia Price, a health advocate with the Bronx Health Network.

The city’s largest public health system also reported a 15% increase in patient satisfaction scores, reflecting the impact of the changes. Officials plan to continue the reforms, with additional funding allocated for mental health crisis teams and telemedicine services in the upcoming budget.

Despite the progress, challenges remain, particularly with staffing shortages in specialized areas like pediatrics and emergency surgery. The city has launched a recruitment campaign to address these gaps and ensure sustained improvements.
