NYC Summer Streets Wraps Up with Record Turnout

The final day of NYC’s Summer Streets program saw a record turnout, as tens of thousands of New Yorkers took advantage of the car-free streets to bike, walk, and explore unique activities along the nearly eight-mile route. The finale featured a packed schedule of performances, workshops, and food markets, making it one of the most successful Summer Streets events in the program’s history.

Highlights included a live dance performance by Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater near Astor Place and a massive outdoor yoga class hosted by a top fitness studio at Foley Square. “Summer Streets is about reclaiming public spaces and celebrating the vibrancy of our city,” said NYC Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez.

This year’s expanded route, which stretched from Brooklyn Bridge to East Harlem, allowed more neighborhoods to participate, drawing praise from residents and local businesses. “It’s great to see the community come together and enjoy our streets in such a positive way,” said Jessica Morales, a business owner in Harlem.

Environmental groups called for more permanent car-free zones, arguing that the success of Summer Streets demonstrates the viability of such initiatives. “This is what a greener, healthier NYC could look like every day,” said Danny Harris, executive director of Transportation Alternatives.

Mayor Eric Adams, who participated in a bike ride along the route, hinted at plans to expand the program further in 2025, potentially adding additional dates and routes in other boroughs.
