Albany, NY — The New York State Legislature passed a sweeping police reform bill yesterday aimed at increasing accountability and transparency within law enforcement agencies statewide. The legislation mandates body cameras for all on-duty officers, bans chokeholds, and establishes a special independent prosecutor for cases involving police misconduct.
The bill passed by a narrow margin following intense debate and protests outside the State Capitol. Opponents, including some law enforcement unions, argue the measures are overly restrictive, while advocates hailed the move as a victory for social justice.
“This bill is a step toward rebuilding trust between police and communities,” said Assemblywoman Rachel Torres, who sponsored the legislation.
Governor Kathy Hochul is expected to sign the bill into law next week.
