DETROIT — The Detroit Tigers notched their milestone 50th win of the 2025 MLB season with a commanding 11–4 victory over the Oakland Athletics at Comerica Park on Tuesday, June 24. Led by a resilient performance from ace left-hander Tarik Skubal, the Tigers overcame a rocky start and stormed back behind a powerful offensive surge.

The evening began under the looming threat of inclement weather, resulting in a brief rain delay—the team’s sixth such interruption in their last seven games. Despite the early disruption, Skubal took the mound determined to maintain his stellar season, coming in with an 8–2 record and a 2.06 ERA. However, the Athletics struck quickly, tagging him for two-run home runs in each of the first two innings.

Unfazed, Skubal rebounded with trademark poise, retiring the next 12 batters he faced. Over six innings of work, he allowed four earned runs, struck out eight, and issued just one walk, demonstrating the kind of tenacity that has made him a rising star in the American League. By the end of the game, his record improved to 9–2 with a 2.29 ERA and 125 strikeouts on the season.

“I didn’t have my best stuff early, but I just focused on executing one pitch at a time,” Skubal said in a postgame interview. “Once I found my rhythm, the guys backed me up in a big way.”

Indeed, Detroit’s offense was explosive. In the bottom of the first, Kerry Carpenter quickly erased Oakland’s early lead with a two-run homer. The Tigers then erupted in the third inning with a five-run rally, sparked by Wenceel Pérez’s two-run double. Moments later, rookie catcher Dillon Dingler crushed a three-run shot to deep left field, giving Detroit a 7–4 advantage.

Riley Greene continued his standout season, going 4-for-5 at the plate and driving in two runs. His performance marked his 11th multi-hit game in June, further cementing his role as a catalyst at the top of the lineup.

“Riley’s been locked in at the plate,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “It’s been fun watching him mature as a hitter. And Wenceel and Dillon—those were clutch hits that gave us the momentum.”

Defensively, Pérez also turned in a strong performance at second base, reinforcing his value as a versatile contributor. The Tigers’ bullpen preserved the lead effectively, with relievers Chase Lee, Tyler Holton, and Matt Gage combining for three scoreless innings to close out the game.

The win pushed Detroit’s record to 50–30, keeping them comfortably atop the American League Central standings. Their success this season has been underpinned by consistent pitching and timely hitting, with Skubal anchoring the rotation as a potential All-Star candidate. His consistent performance has sparked the fan nickname “Tarik Tuesday” whenever he starts on the mound.

Looking ahead, the Tigers will continue their home series against the struggling Athletics, aiming to maintain their momentum as they eye a potential playoff berth. With Skubal and the offense in sync, Detroit appears poised to remain a formidable force in the second half of the season.
