Macy’s Fireworks Light Up NYC Amid Heatwave

New York City, July 4, 2024 — Millions gathered along the East River last night for the annual Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks show, braving sweltering heat to celebrate Independence Day. The 48th iteration of the event featured a record 80,000 shells launched into the sky, synchronized to a patriotic soundtrack that included tributes to American history and culture.

The festivities began early in the day, with parades in all five boroughs and a hot dog eating contest in Coney Island, where Joey Chestnut reclaimed his title. As temperatures soared to 102°F, the city deployed additional cooling centers and water stations, while first responders handled dozens of heat-related emergencies.

Despite the heat, the fireworks display was hailed as one of the best in recent years, with spectacular views from Brooklyn Bridge Park, Roosevelt Island, and Long Island City. “It’s worth the heat just to see this,” said attendee Maria Gonzales, who traveled from New Jersey with her family.
Officials reminded New Yorkers to stay hydrated and limit outdoor activities as the heatwave was forecast to continue through the weekend. The Fourth of July celebrations, however, were a moment of unity and joy for the city.
