NYC Announces Expansion of Electric Bus Fleet

New York City — Mayor Eric Adams and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced on Tuesday a major expansion of the city’s electric bus fleet, with plans to add 500 new zero-emission buses by 2026. The $2.7 billion initiative, funded through federal grants and state investments, is part of a broader effort to make New York City’s public transit system more sustainable.

The expanded fleet will replace older diesel buses, which have been criticized for contributing to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. The new electric buses will operate on routes across all five boroughs, prioritizing areas with the highest levels of air pollution, such as the South Bronx and East Brooklyn.

“This is a game-changer for our environment and our communities,” said Mayor Adams at the announcement. “We’re not just modernizing our transit system—we’re improving air quality and health outcomes for millions of New Yorkers.”

The electric buses are designed to be quieter and more energy-efficient than their diesel counterparts, with fast-charging stations planned at 15 depots citywide. While advocates praised the initiative, critics raised concerns about the timeline and the need for robust maintenance training for MTA staff.

MTA Chair Janno Lieber assured New Yorkers that the agency is committed to a seamless transition. “This investment brings us closer to a cleaner, greener future for our city,” Lieber said. “We’re excited to lead the way in sustainable transit.”
