NYC Begins Installation of Public EV Charging Hubs

The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) announced the start of construction on 10 public electric vehicle (EV) charging hubs, part of the city’s plan to accelerate the transition to green energy. Each hub will feature up to 20 chargers, including high-speed options capable of fully charging an EV in 30 minutes.

The first hubs are being built in parking lots and transit-accessible locations in Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx, with plans to expand to other boroughs by 2026. “These hubs are a game-changer for New Yorkers looking to switch to electric vehicles,” said DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez.

The project is funded through a $200 million federal grant under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. City officials estimate the hubs will support an additional 50,000 EVs on the road by 2030, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality.

Residents welcomed the initiative but expressed concerns about affordability. “This is great for the environment, but EVs are still out of reach for many families,” said Juan Morales, a Bronx resident. The city is working on financial assistance programs to make EVs more accessible to low- and middle-income households.
