The New York City Marathon announced the creation of a new disability division, ensuring greater inclusivity for athletes with physical and cognitive impairments. The division, which will debut in the November 2024 race, includes wheelchair, handcycle, and assisted runner categories.

“We’re thrilled to make the marathon more inclusive and accessible,” said Race Director Ted Metellus during a press event in Central Park. “Every athlete deserves the chance to participate in this iconic event.”

The division will feature dedicated start times and support teams to ensure a safe and seamless experience for participants. Athletes praised the move as a milestone in adaptive sports. “This is a huge step forward for representation and inclusivity,” said Jessica Cox, a Paralympian who plans to compete.

The announcement comes as the marathon celebrates its largest field ever, with over 55,000 runners expected to participate. Organizers also unveiled plans to expand adaptive sports programs year-round, including training camps and clinics.

The addition of the disability division has already drawn international attention, with entries from athletes in over 20 countries. The city is working with advocacy groups to ensure accessibility at all marathon events and along the route.
