City officials held an emergency press briefing today to outline preparations for a major snowstorm expected to hit the region later this week. Forecasts predict up to 12 inches of snow and strong winds, with the storm likely to disrupt transportation and power services.
The Department of Sanitation (DSNY) has deployed 2,000 plows and 500 salt spreaders, prioritizing major roads, transit hubs, and hospitals. “We’re fully prepared to keep the city moving,” said DSNY Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
The MTA announced plans to suspend outdoor subway service and implement modified bus schedules during the storm. Residents were urged to avoid unnecessary travel and use public transportation where possible.
The city has also opened 20 warming centers and expanded shelter capacity for homeless residents. Mayor Eric Adams emphasized the importance of community support. “Check on your neighbors, especially seniors and those with disabilities,” he urged.
Emergency management teams will provide updates through social media and the Notify NYC system as the storm progresses.
