NYC Hosts Climate Justice March Ahead of UN Climate Conference

Tens of thousands of New Yorkers took to the streets today for a massive Climate Justice March, calling for urgent action to address the climate crisis ahead of next week’s United Nations Climate Conference. The march, which began in Foley Square and ended at the United Nations headquarters, featured activists, students, and community leaders from across the city.

Participants carried signs reading “Act Now for Our Future” and “Climate Justice is Social Justice,” with chants demanding stronger commitments from world leaders. “We’re here to remind everyone that the stakes couldn’t be higher,” said youth activist Maya Johnson, who spoke at the rally.

The event also highlighted the disproportionate impact of climate change on low-income communities and communities of color. “Climate justice means ensuring that the most vulnerable are not left behind,” said Reverend Lennox Yearwood, president of the Hip Hop Caucus.

City officials expressed solidarity with the marchers, with Public Advocate Jumaane Williams emphasizing the need for bold local action. The city has already committed to reducing emissions by 40% by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

The march concluded with a concert featuring performances by Billie Eilish and local artists, underscoring the role of art and culture in driving social change.
